KOHALA COAST
Hawaii's first golf resort was the MAUNA KEA RESORT, where two of the most dynamic golf courses in Hawaii flourish. Its brand-name layout—Mauna Kea Golf Course—a Robert Trent Jones Sr. classic (fully renovated in 2008) is now a semi-private club open to members, Mauna Kea Resort guests and GOLFHAWAIICARD holders. Hawaii's most famous and best course is now better than ever due to the meticulous attention to refurbishment detail paid by Reese Jones, the youngest son of the late Jones Sr. Mauna Kea's incredible array of elevated greens still exist, but they are now all cupped to actually hold lofty and not-so-lofty approaches. Some other subtle changes to sight-lines and bunkers, along with contemporary turf applications, bring Mauna Kea back to its preeminent place on Hawaii's golf roster.
The equally compelling Hapuna Prince Golf Course, designed by the team of Arnold Palmer and the late Ed Seay, spiritually winds through the bluffs above the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel. Hapuna's 'can't-miss,' visually stunning layout is always in first-rate condition. As the antithesis to the approach shot demands of Mauna Kea, Hapuna requires accurate tee shots from tees that most often distract golfers with breathtaking views and the illusion of target fairways.
The WAIKOLOA BEACH RESORT has become the epicenter of Kohala Coast activity for golf, dining, shopping and a broad range of accommodations. Its two two fine layouts—The Waikoloa Beach Golf Course, designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., and The Waikoloa Kings' Golf Course, designed by the team of Tom Weiskopf & Jay Morrish—have benefited from the watchful eye and tenacity of Hawaii's best golf operator, Scott Head, who was brought back to Hawaii in 2007 to oversee Waikoloa golf. Each course is distinctly different and provide a host of memorable golf moments—from the Beach Course's lusty 7th Green, surrounded by ocean, to the Kings' Course's signature and idiosyncratic short par-4s at the 5th and 13th Hole.
Waikoloa Village Golf Club sits about five miles directly above (and several degrees of temperature lower) the Waikoloa Resort in its namesake village. The always well conditioned layout, designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., winds its way through the surrounding condo communities with some surprising elevation changes and contours. Not so surprisingly, astounding views of the ocean, Kohala Coast, mountains, volcanic protrusions and stark lava flows are evident at every turn of the head.
KAILUA-KONA
Highway 190 runs from Waimea to Kailua-Kona high-above the Kona-Kohala Coast and about five miles short of Kona, directly above Kona Airport, Makalei Golf Club rears its lovely and fascinating head. Fabulous new Bentgrass greens and glorious game birds galore dominate this intensely challenging layout by Dick Nugent. It is truly a one-of-a-kind golf course and a tremendous value.
