“The Gathering Place,” as Oahu is also known, is home to Honolulu, Waikiki, Diamond Head, Pearl Harbor, Polynesian Cultural Center, Hanauma Bay, the “Banzai Pipeline” and the big waves of the North Shore, as well as almost 900,000 of Hawaii’s 1.3 million residents. Ninety-five percent of Oahu’s lodging is in or around Waikiki, so prepare to drive 25-35 minutes to our recommended golf courses. They are well worth the short drive.
Oahu’s golf courses are numerous with five private clubs, a municipal golf system (six courses) and military golf system (six courses) that are quite exemplary. In fact, if you are active or retired military (or with certain Federal government credentials) and love golf, there cannot possibly be a better place to visit or live.
The remaining golf offerings are numerous, but rather pricey, with visitor green fees of $130 to about $199. That probably explains why many of these courses sell far less than 10% of their tee times to visitors. Less than a handful get close to 40% visitor rounds, so it is remarkable that finding real value is as difficult as it is.
On Oahu, there are many things to see and do away from the golf course, as indicated above. So, we build our golf packages with a little less golf than on the outer islands (Big Island and Maui).
We feature four terrific Oahu golf experiences. Dick Nugent’s compelling ode to golf in the lush tropics of the island’s windward side — Koolau Golf Club, and three fascinating layouts on the leeward side: Oahu’s only 27-hole layout—the Hawaii Prince Golf Club, designed by Arnold Palmer and the late Ed Seay; and two Robin Nelson designs — the emerald green hues of the paspalum turf at the Coral Creek Golf Club and vistas aplenty, which are found only at Royal Kunia Country Club.
We can also recommend two military layouts that allow outside play by showing up or standing by. On weekdays, you may make same-day reservations. Leilehua Golf Course in central Oahu is a wonderful parkland course with cooler temperatures and stands of mature trees everywhere. It is also eminently walkable and delivers profound value.
WHAT TWO DECADES OF EXPERIENCE TELLS US
After almost 20 years of delivering golfers to Waikiki, HawaiiGolfDeals has tried to read and respond to the pulse of thousands of those who we have booked. It seems that golfers really enjoy the Waikiki Gateway, which unfolds as soon as you pass over the bridge that spans the Ala Wai canal along Ala Moana Boulevard as you travel from the airport and past the Ala Moana Shopping Center.
What makes the Gateway area so nice is that you can take a 12-minute walk into central Waikiki or a 5-minute walk to Ala Moana. Even the Ward Center shopping, dining and entertainment options are walkable. Best of all, is the neat setting over the Waikiki Yacht Harbor and the ease of getting in and out of the area without having to get caught in the heart of Waikiki on both sides of your golf or sight-seeing experiences.
Therefore, keeping in mind that we can book virtually any lodging property in Hawaii, Oahu and Waikiki, we have made sensational deals for you at the Hawaii Prince Hotel, the first hotel into the Waikiki Gateway and the Waikiki Parc Hotel, which is very close by just into Waikiki proper. Either will make your Oahu golf adventure engagingly memorable.
PREMIUM HOTEL ACCOMMODATIONS WITH REAL VALUE
The WAIKIKI PARC HOTEL is known for its urban-chic premium accommodations and always top-notch service. We like the Parc for a few reasons not generally known to the general public. When HawaiiGolfDeals books you at the Waikiki Parc, you receive recently renovated and refurbished high quality accommodations, complimentary self-parking in their in-house parking structure and no resort fees whatsoever.
The views are also outstanding, whether Mountain or Ocean, and you’ll be delighted with the access in and out of Waikiki vis-a-vis the Waikiki Gateway. Just a three-minute walk into the heart of Waikiki, less than 10 minutes to the Ala Moana Shopping Center, and with scores of restaurants and the beach within five minutes.
Just a hundred feet from the famous “beachwalk” shopping and dining block, the Waikiki Parc is home to Nobu Restaurant and is located across the street from the jointly-owned beachfront hotel known as The Halekulani, with its very high-end accommodations, restaurants and beachfront.
The Parc is one of the real hidden gems that HawaiiGolfDeals has been touting for over two decades. It never disappoints and always delivers the goods, especially for golfers, who have vehicles and appreciate complimentary parking.
In addition to being able to book you anywhere on Oahu or in Waikiki (or anywhere in Hawaii, for that matter), we highly recommend and book …
The HAWAII PRINCE HOTEL delivers premium oceanfront rooms (ours all above the 10th Floor) with delicious views over the Waikiki Yacht Harbor with Diamond Head to the left and the mountains of the leeward coast to the right.
The Hawaii Prince Hotel also offers a host of creative and lushly presented dining options in their Prince Court and Hakone Restaurants. The Prince Court presents a sumptuous buffet for breakfast (included in your stay via HawaiiGolfDeals), lunch and dinner. The lunch and dinner fare also includes menu items with the dinner menu being particularly creative in its duo priced prix fixed dinners. Hakone’s presents traditional Japanese fare via buffet and menu each night. And just a three-minute walk in either direction along Ala Moana Boulevard yields at least 20 other dining options.
Another nice perk at the Hawaii Prince Hotel is that they have a two or three times daily shuttle running back and forth to their Hawaii Prince Golf Club at Ewa Beach about 35-40 minutes away. There is no charge whatsoever, just check with the bell staff or front desk for details. If you are playing two days at the 27-hole Prince course, we highly recommend taking the shuttle one day and driving the other, so you can stop at the nearby Pearl Harbor and/or the Waikele Premium Outlets after golf.
You may append any of our Oahu golf vacation packages to your Big Island, Maui or Lanai golf packages. Making a stop in Oahu is a terrific way to begin or, even better, to end your Hawaii golf vacation. You’ll play some terrific golf courses and see many of the sights that have made Hawaii famous.
