ビッグアイランドは地球上で最も幻想的な場所の一つです。 ハワイ諸島の全ての島を足してもハワイ島はその面積の２倍近くあリますが人口は12万人程です。 ビッグアイランド南東側の海岸線添にあるキラウエア火山は現在も噴火が続き、訪れる人を興奮させています。又、島の中心辺りにはモアナロアとマウナケアの２つの火山があります。 両火山とも海抜 4500メートル以上あり、モアナロアは海底からの高さが11,000メートル近くあり, エベレストよりも遥かに高くアイランド火山としては世界で一番大きな火山です。
ビッグアイランドは基本的には ２つの地域に分けられます。一つは48キロ程続くカイルア−コナとコハラコーストでその海岸線には, マウナケア、マウナラニ ワイコロアの３つの主要リゾートがあります。又、コハラコーストから少し中に入った所にコンドーやプライベートな住宅が建ち並ぶワイコロアビレッジがあります。そして、島の反対側のヒロから60キロ程上った辺りに、火山ビレッジとハワイ火山国立公園があります。
ヒロはコハラコースト側に比べると自然がそのまま残されている所が多いので、それなりに訪ねる名所があり、度々訪れる観光客も少なくないようです。Perhaps a personal story best sums up the Big Island experience. Several years ago, I had the pleasure of bringing my mom and dad to the moonlike landscape that is on display on a vast expanse of the Big Island. As we drove from the Kona airport toward the Kohala Coast through miles of stark and foreboding lava fields, my mom turned to me and said, "Are we really spending 10 days here?" Ten days later, as our plane lifted off from Hilo airport I heard, "When are we coming back?"
