The News Just Keeps Getting Worse

 

The golf heaven that used to be found on The Garden Island continues to be a shell of its former self. Over the past half dozen years the island's golf assets have struggled for market share, while they continued to raise prices in the face of a loss of business and the recessionary economy.

 

Perhaps the final straw occurred during the past several years when so many resort holes, for a variety of reasons, were closed pretty much concurrently. At one point, there were actually 45 resort holes shuttered at the same time.

 

Right now, there are still 27 resort holes of golf closed, supposedly for renovation, and another nine resort holes that have been shuttered forever. This leaves most golf visitors, many of whom had no idea, with many less golf options. And for most of the first half of 2012, this situation is likely to remain the same.

 

In an amazing turn of events in 2009, Kauai's outstanding municipal course was so emboldened by the goings on around them that the county council raised visitor pricing as much as 88% (to a high of $88 to ride on a weekend and $60 walking on a weekday). After a year and a radical deterioration of visitor rounds (necessary to sustain the less than $10 it generally costs residents to play), the county lowered the visitor rates for walking to $48 weekdays and $60 weekends.

 

The entire unfortunate circumstances surrounding golf on Kauai is more than mitigated by the outstanding golf you can find on other islands. So, here is our best advice...

 

The Garden Island is a lovely destination with much other to do than striking the dimpled sphere. If you really want to see Kauai, spend less time there (from 3-5 days will be more than enough) and play your golf on The Big Island, Maui and/or Oahu.
