Royal Hawaiian Golf Club (formerly Luana Hills Country Club and now returned to its original name) is a lush tropical layout set amidst jungle-like terrain off the Pali Highway on Oahu's windward side. This is a track that serious golfers will appreciate for the challenge and ambiance. Designed as a country club by the ingenious Perry Dye, landing areas are tighter and greens are smaller than the resort variety of golf course. But fear not, good scoring is achieved by playing away from trouble and to the forgiving side of each hole, as is the case at most courses designed by anyone named Dye. The “Valley Nine” offers the best example of the philosophy and, as such, probably plays 2-4 strokes easier than the “Jungle Nine.” Our favorite golf photographer, Evan Schiller, has identified at least 26 different perspectives he wants to shoot on his next trip to Royal Hawaiian.
