When the late Robin Nelson, golf course architect extraordinaire, set forth to design what would become known as The Dunes at Maui Lani Golf Course, he was able to coalesce his knowledge of Scottish and Irish links golf with his vast experience designing and renovating over a dozen Hawaii courses. But this time, he fashioned a layout that had more than a bit of the unique. Nelson’s main charge was routing the layout around and between prodigious deposits of alluvial sand—shaped by over a million years of volcanic activity, receding seas and wind—in the isthmus that lies between Maui’s two distinct volcanoes. In fact, this particular location is one of the very few places in Hawaii where sand dunes actually exist. Not coincidentally, strategic bunkering seems to pop up almost diabolically, water comes to the fore on five holes, serious elevation changes abound between the 4th and 15th Holes, and wind is usually a factor. The Dunes really delivers. Every shot in your repertoire and every club in your bag will be utilized. That’s why you’ll be coming back to this landmark layout for seconds and thirds. Here’s a little tip: Be careful not to bite off more than you can chew by playing something far less demanding than the 141-slope back tees.
