The slightly upscale image that's been carefully crafted in travel annals IS what you'll find when you arrive on the second largest Hawaiian Island. Those who live there say: Maui no ka oi—Maui is the best. Those who visit will be transfixed by the beaches, a majestic volcano and divine cuisine.

The "Valley Isle" is actually two islands created by two volcanoes and connected by a fertile isthmus. West Maui, formed by the Pu’u Kukui volcano, is remarkably different from the South side. South Maui is set at the base of the world's largest dormant (not extinct) volcano, Haleakala ("House of the Sun"), which reaches over 10,000 feet to the sky.

The pristine quietude of the Wailea Resort more often succumbs to the lively sound of metal striking dimpled sphere rather than the engines of cars or aircraft. Such is the case at the venerable layout known as WAILEA OLD BLUE Golf Club, which has served as the welcome mat for the entire resort and neighboring resort at Makena. Old Blue delivers a magnificently manicured design, which may well be the best conditioned course on Maui. As the Arthur Jack Snyder design winds gently through the bluffs above the Wailea Resort gateway, there are a host of quality golf holes that are fair to all and reward good play with good scores. Play it once and you'll have to play it again.

For many years, the Makena Resort offered 36 holes of Robert Trent Jones Jr. golf. In 2008, the South Course closed for lot development. As luck would have it, the North Course, which is now called the MAKENA Golf Club, remains open for play to all comers. For our money, this has always been one of the absolute best courses in Hawaii with views to match. Playing it once is just not enough. Trust us, you could play this course three or four times on a Maui golf adventure and find something new, exciting and eye-popping every time out. Golf Magazine (December 2009) called it "Maui's most underrated golf course." Bring your best game and your camera!

THE DUNES AT MAUI LANI Golf Course is centrally located (between the southside and westside of Maui) very close to Kahului (OGG) Airport, which makes it an ideal place for a first and/or last round on Maui (plus a few rounds in-between). Clearly, one of Hawaii's most unique golf layouts, Robin Nelson has crafted this 18-hole beauty as a tip-of-the-cap to Scottish links golf with an island flair. The terrain, inspired by prodigious sand dunes (in an area not adjacent to the ocean or beach) delivers an exhilarating golf experience. Throw in some dynamic elevation changes, water features and breezes, which make every club in the bag come to the fore, and you'll see why The Dunes is one of the most talked about Hawaii golf courses.

ELLEAIR MAUI Golf Club, may well be one of Hawaii's most improved layouts due to the renovation of many holes on the back nine. The WJ Noewis design has something for everyone–from lovely views, to water features, to rolling terrain in the lee of Haleakula, to crafty greens and delightful bunkering. It even features a breathtaking number of lonely Silversword plants, which flowers once in its lifetime and dies. In fact, Elleair was originally named "Silversword GC." The front nine retains much of its original flavor while the back nine has found its niche with an outstanding variety of holes that skirt the new development residing in its mid-section. If you've never played it, or haven't played it since it was Silversword, you're in for a real treat.

PUKALANI Country Club is stunningly perched at the gateway to Maui's upcountry in its namesake town. At about 600 feet above sea level on the downslope of Haleakula, the views are breathtaking and the golf is truly grand. The 18-hole/19-green Bob Baldock layout is user-friendly, yet demanding at almost 6,900 yards from the tips. Why 19 greens? The par-3 at No. 3 offers two target greens. To the right, go across the barranca for a slightly uphill shot . To the left, shoot downhill to a sunken green. Nice touch! Speaking of touch, Pukalani CC is now under the deft touch of Ron Huffman, so be sure to say hello to one of Hawaii's nicest and best PGA pros who will always entertain with a tip or two from his bag of golf treasures. With your GOLFHAWAIICARD Pukalani is also one of the best golf values in the entire state, and certainly on Maui.

Editor's note: To be perfectly frank, for most of this decade, there has not been much golf value on Maui. Yet, there are plenty of available tee times. As a result, we have prevailed upon a few very wise golf operators to work with us to create a terrific group of courses you can play once each or many times for a memorable Maui golf vacation.
