The "Valley Isle" is actually two islands created by two volcanoes and connected by a fertile isthmus. West Maui, formed by the Pu’u Kukui volcano, is remarkably different from the south side. South Maui is set at the base of the world's largest (it has been upgraded from dormant—not extinct— to active) volcano, Haleakala ("House of the Sun"), which reaches over 10,000 feet to the sky.
Golf on Maui is as fickle as it gets. The resorts feel they have been commissioned by the golf gods to charge an arm and a leg (along with a first-born) to grace their fairways and greens. They completely forget that so many avid golfers play as couples and a $235 greens fee is actually $470 + sales tax, tipping and some food & beverage. $500 or more toward a round of golf is really not reality for the 99% of us who strike the dimpled sphere—especially in a tough economy. Funny thing is... when you ask these golf decision makers if they would spend $500 for them and their significant other or even $235 for themselves, they look at you like you must be ready for a straight-jacket to be applied. None of them has ever paid a cent to play golf and most likely would never want to pay more than $50.
Anyway... there are a few wise golf operators on Maui who understand and welcome the visitor golfer with open arms and wonderful golf experiences...
THE DUNES AT MAUI LANI Golf Course is centrally located (between the southside and westside of Maui) very close to Kahului (OGG) Airport, which makes it an ideal place for a first and/or last round on Maui (plus a few rounds in-between). Clearly, one of Hawaii's most unique golf layouts, Robin Nelson has crafted this 18-hole beauty as a tip-of-the-cap to Scottish links golf with an island flair. The terrain, inspired by prodigious sand dunes (in an area not adjacent to the ocean or beach) delivers an exhilarating golf experience. Throw in some dynamic elevation changes, water features and breezes, which make every club in the bag come to the fore, and you'll see why The Dunes is one of the most talked about Hawaii golf courses.
PUKALANI Country Club is stunningly perched at the gateway to Maui's upcountry in its namesake town. At about 600 feet above sea level on the downslope of Haleakula, the views are breathtaking and the golf is truly grand. The 18-hole/19-green Bob Baldock layout is user-friendly, yet demanding at almost 6,900 yards from the tips. Why 19 greens? The par-3 at No. 3 offers two target greens. To the right, go across the barranca for a slightly uphill shot . To the left, shoot downhill to a sunken green. Nice touch! Speaking of touch, Pukalani CC is now under the deft touch of Ron Huffman, so be sure to say hello to one of Hawaii's nicest and best PGA pros who will always entertain with a tip or two from his bag of golf treasures. With your GOLFHAWAIICARD Pukalani is also one of the best golf values in the entire state, and certainly on Maui.
You might also like to get out to Maui's incredibly scenic municipal course—WAIEHU MUNICIPAL Golf Course—an oceanfront delight. For about $55 walking (power carts are $20 for one or two players/hand carts are available for a few bucks), you can take in the amazing sights and sounds on a course with more oceanfront holes than any resort course in Hawaii. Sure, the course conditions aren't what you get at a few of the resorts, but you won't be disappointed. It's a good to avoid weekends and holidays and visit on a weekday! Phone: (808) 243-7400
