The Island of Oahu is also the City and County of Honolulu. It is NOT the Big Island, but it is the big population center with almost 900,000 of the state’s 1.35 million residents. As such, it’s Hawaii’s political, business, tourism and cultural center, which probably explains its Hawaiian moniker — “The Gathering Place.”
Oahu is also home to Waikiki, Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head Crater, the Polynesian Cultural Center, Bishop Museum, the big waves of the Banzai Pipeline, Hanauma Bay, Chinatown, Ala Moana Shopping Center, Aloha Tower Marketplace and a virtual rainbow of other visitor attractions and activities.
Over ninety-percent of the island’s lodging options are located in Waikiki, so with that in mind, be prepared to drive 25-40 minutes to our GOLFHAWAIICARD courses off the Pali Highway on the Windward side of the island (Koolau Golf Club) and along Fort Weaver Road on the Ewa Plain on the Leeward side of Oahu (Hawaii Prince Golf Club, Royal Kunia Country Club & Coral Creek Golf Course).
Both the quantity and quality of the golf courses on the third largest island in the Hawaiian archipelago are substantial. In fact, about half of the state’s golf courses are located on Oahu. From seaside links to courses tucked at the foot of steep mountains, Oahu may be a golfer’s dream come true with variety as the focal point of this exciting golfscape. Unfortunately, the vast majority of Oahu’s golf courses are priced $130-$199 or more to visitors, which makes it tough to find value and play lots of golf.
But have no fear, the HawaiiGolfDeals guys can still pull some value out of the old golf cap.
Oahu’s WINDWARD side the base of the Pali range of the island is more jungle-like and prone to precipitation. It encompasses the towns of Kaneohe and Kailua, and the general area surrounding the Marine Base at Kaneohe.
Windward golf is exemplified by Koolau Golf Club, which makes a profound and compelling statement. Tucked in footings of the Pali Mountain Range, quite literally in its creases, this engaging venue will forever impact your view of creative golf course design with virtually all of the elements that can be incorporated into a layout. Forced carries, some water and fascinating green locations are just some of the goodies you’ll find in this jungle golf setting.
Over on the South coast (LEEWARD side) of Oahu, at the far side of Pearl Harbor, you’ll find three venerable layouts along the Fort Weaver Road corridor.
Hawaii Prince Golf Club at Ewa Beach, which delivers the only 27-hole golf course on Oahu, is an Arnold Palmer/Ed Seay-design is clearly reminiscent of what one might find in Florida, with a plethora of lagoons and ponds on a relatively level piece of turf. But the maturation process, along with long views of the surrounding mountains and the extra nine holes, has certainly put this worthy course on Oahu’s golf register.
Two designs by the late and great Robin Nelson round out the Fort Weaver Road trio…
The emerald hue, which emanates from lush Seashore Paspalum turf, makes Coral Creek Golf Course somewhat unique. With its four lakes and enchanting overall design, this relatively level layout winds gracefully through former sugar cane fields and delivers quite a challenge for all comers. It was the last course to open in the 20th Century on Oahu.
Unlike the two courses smack in the middle of the Ewa Plain, Royal Kunia Country Club sits high atop Fort Weaver Road in a newfangled subdivision known as Kunia. From its magnificent perch, golfers are treated to some of the best vistas found at any Hawaii golf course and the opportunity to score on the scintillatingly fair layout. This was the last course built on Oahu in the 20th Century and first to open in the 21st.
