"The Gathering Place," as Oahu is also known, is home to Honolulu, Waikiki, Diamond Head, Pearl Harbor, Polynesian Cultural Center, Hanauma Bay, the "Banzai Pipeline" and the big waves of the North Shore, as well as about 875,000 of Hawaii's 1.3 million residents. Ninety-five percent of Oahu's lodging is in or around Waikiki, so prepare to drive 25-35 minutes to our recommended golf courses. They are well worth the short drive.

Oahu's golf courses are numerous with four private clubs, a municipal golf system (six courses) and military golf system (six courses) that are quite exemplary. In fact, if you are active or retired military (or with certain Federal government credentials) and love golf, there cannot possibly be a better place to visit or live.

The remaining golf offerings are numerous, but rather pricey, with visitor green fees of $130 to about $175. That probably explains why many do not sell even 10% of their tee times to visitors. No more than a handful get close to 40% visitor rounds, so it is remarkable that finding real value is that difficult.

On Oahu, there are are many things to see and do away from the golf course, as indicated above. So, we build our golf packages with a little less golf than on the outer islands (Big Island and Maui).

We feature two terrific golf experiences and 45 holes. Perry Dye's 18-hole jungle stunner, Luana Hills Country Club, and Oahu's only 27-hole layout--the Hawaii Prince Golf Club, designed by Arnold Palmer and the late Ed Seay.

We can also recommend two military layouts that allow outside play by showing up or standing by. Sometimes, you may make same-day reservations. Leilehua Golf Course in central Oahu is a wonderful parkland course with cooler temperatures and stands of mature trees everywhere. It is complimented by Barber's Point Golf Course in the Kapolei area of Oahu's Leeward Coast. Both of these delightful tracks are eminently walkable and deliver profound value at about $34 weekdays with hand carts ($4) and power carts ($14 per-person) available.

The Hawaii Prince Hotel also offers a host of creative and lushly presented dining options in their Prince Court and Hakone Restaurants. The lunch and dinner fare also includes menu items with the dinner menu being particularly creative in its duo priced prix fixed dinners. Hakone's presents traditional Japanese fare via buffet and menu each night. And just a 5-minute walk in either direction along Ala Moana Boulevard yields at least 20 other dining options.

Another nice perk at the Hawaii Prince Hotel is that they have a two or three times daily shuttle running back and forth to their Hawaii Prince Golf Club at Ewa Beach about 35-40 minutes away. There is no charge whatsoever, just check with the bell staff or front desk for details. If you are playing two days at the 27-hole Prince course, we highly recommend taking the shuttle one day and driving the other, so you can stop at the nearby Waikele Premium Outlets or Pearl Harbor after golf.

In keeping with our read of the golfer mindset, we know there are those of you who want some kitchen facilities and access to a washer/dryer with all the other conveniences and amenities usually found at hotels. Behold the ILIKAI SUITESat the Waikiki Gateway, right next door to the Hawaii Prince. 

This venerable establishment is a Waikiki landmark, famous for being in the opening credits of Hawaii 5-O. From one of its balconies (known as lanais) stood Chief McGarrett (Jack Lord) pointing out to Ala Moana Boulevard. Recently, The Ilikai has been taken over by Aqua Hotels and Resorts as its flagship boutique property. And a nice job they, and General Manage Terry Dowsett, have done. The accommodations are extremely spacious and the location is right next to the newly renovated beach lagoon behind the Hilton Hawaiian Village. While the Ilikai does boast a rooftop pool, the lagoon is one of the best places on Oahu for a pure swim off sandy shores.

Since our suite accommodations deliver either a full kitchen or deluxe kitchenette we do not include breakfast. But have no fear, if you'd like to mosey on down to a deluxe continental breakfast buffet, it is right off the lobby at the former "Canoes" Restaurant space. Like the neighboring Hawaii Prince Hotel, the dining and shopping options are many. Sarento's Top of the "I" resides at the top of the Ilikai with one of the most stunning views on Oahu. The Hawaii Prince Hotel dining options are right next door as are at least 20 more places to eat, drink and feast. Ilikai guests may also grab the free shuttle to the Hawaii Prince Golf Club.
